22 Confusing Phrasal Verbs

1. fill in on vs fill in for 

    to fill someone in : 정보를 주다
    -> Please fill me in on what happened.

    to fill in for someone : 대신하다

    -> My colleague was sick, so I had to fill in for her.

 

2. fill in vs fill out vs fill up

    to fill in : 빈칸을 채우다

    -> fill in the blank

    to fill out : 폼을 작성하다

    -> fill out the tax form
    to fill up : (자동차, 위, 병) 등을 with 액체 로 채우다   

    -> I filled up my car with gasoline.

 

3. walk in vs walk in on someone

    to walk in : 들어가다

    to walk in on someone : 개인공간에 실수로 들어가다

    -> I walked in on him while he was getting underessed.

 

4. call out vs call someone out 

    to call out something :   소리쳐 부르다

    -> When I saw him I called out his name

   to call someone out : 잘못된 행위에 대해 설명을 요구하다. 야단치다.

   -> When he said those bad words to you, did you call him out on it?

 

5. come down to vs come down with 

   to come down to : 결과적으로 ~에 이르다

   -> It came down to two options, and we had to make a difficult choice.

  to come down with : 병에 걸리다.

   -> He might be coming down with a cold.

 

6. break out in vs break out of

   to break out in : 갑자기 피부발작이 일어나다.

   -> His back broke out in spots. (a rash, in a swet)

   to break out of : 벗어나다 탈출하다

   -> He broke out of jail

 

7. put something up vs put someone up vs put up with someone or something

   to put something up : 만들다, 세우다.

   -> Do you know how to put up a tent?

   to put someone up : 잠시 머물게 해주다.

   -> When my friends visit, I put them up in the guest bedroom.

   to put up with someone(something) : 견디다 참다

   -> He's a bully, I'm tired of putting up with him.

 

8 pull up vs pull over vs pull into

   to pull up : 차를 길가나 특정장소에 멈추다.

   -> Please pull up here and I'll get out of the car.

   to pull over : 응급시 또는 필요시에 천천히 차를 길가로 움직여 멈추다.

   -> The police asked him to pull over.

   -> I was pulled over and given a speeding ticket.

  to pull into : 주차장, 차고등에 차를 대다.

   -> I pulled into the gas station to fill up

 

9. turn in vs turn to vs turn into 

  to turn in

    잠자러 가다.

    -> I'm tired. I think I'm going to turn in.

    제출하다. (oneself) 출두하다

    -> I lost my wallet. I hope someone turns it in to the police.

   to turn to someone : 도움이나 충고를 찾다.

   -> When I need advice, I turn to my older brother.

   to turn into : 변신하다. 

   -> When ice melts, it turns into water.

   -> This is a great book. I hope they will turn it into a film.
